Can Cinnamon Help Keep Migraines Away?

Cinnamon is not only great as a delicious addition to oatmeal, but a few studies show that it may help prevent migraines.

In a 2020 randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled study that included 50 individuals with migraine, they were given cinnamon or a placebo (cornstarch pills) for 2 months. The cinnamon group received 600mg (1/4 tsp) three times a day.

Compared with the placebo group, those taking cinnamon experienced fewer migraines per month, reduced migraine intensity, and shorter-lasting attacks. Researchers also observed a decrease in serum inflammatory markers.

Another study also looked at this in 2024.

This was also a randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled study with 50 individuals as well. It showed that cinnamon can significantly help reduce disability symptoms associated with migraines.

Neither study specified whether Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) or Cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) was used. However, Ceylon cinnamon is a safer cinnamon for daily use.

Based on these two studies, we can assume that cinnamon can reduce migraine burden and help with migraine symptoms.
