Dolphins=Whales

Here's a quick tidbit of knowledge I recently learned and I'm passing on to my fellow nerds: dolphins are whales. What?!  Many of us view dolphins and whales (like the humpback and blue) as separate groups of animals, but formally they're all in the same order called Cetacea, or Whale. So yes, dolphins are considered whales, but not all whales are dolphins.

Within Cetacea, there are two suborders:

Baleen Whales
Toothed Whales

Baleen whales include species such as the blue and the humpback whale. Toothed whales consist of smaller varieties of whales like dolphins, sperm whales, and porpoises. The killer whale, aka orca, is the largest type of dolphin.

While you're here, take a moment to check out the uniquely adorable pink Amazon river dolphin. Yes, it really is bubblegum pink and chubby. However, it's critically endangered, so consider helping in a small way.
